Use of Predators

Pigeons and other birds can breed rapidly. One reason for this is the absence of natural enemies.

Here the focus is on the use of predatory birds. The predators (mostly peregrine falcons) are introduced into the area of operations and provide for natural hostilities.

This method can be used against all species of bird, including crows and seagulls which are difficult to drive way.

The important aspects of using predators

  • The settlement of peregrine falcons is only carried out by our competent falconers.
  • We settle about 4-5 weeks old falcons in the area where there is heavy breeding of other birds. The nesting box is included. After another four weeks of feeding, the falcons can feed themselves and go out for hunting.
  • Also after the falcon has become old enough, we take care of the falcons by medical checks. By regularly feeding them additionally, we try to increase the bird's fixation to the area. This can be further increased by settling a couple of falcons.
  • Still, the risk that the falcons fly away, cannot be totally avoided.
  • We settle the birds with the aim to rebuild the natural equilibrium between the falcons and the prey birds. But it cannot be expected that the area will be free of other birds.
  • Predators are used for large industrial plants, stadiums, halls and extensive factory grounds.
  • We only use this method with predator birds who are domestic to the area. Therefore, a special permit is usually not required.
  • The introduction of predators is very difficult and is only suitable for medium to heavy populations of prey birds
